Description

Dimensions - Length 0055 m Width 0040
A RECTANGULAR PLATFORM, 55 X 40M, IS FAINTLY VISIBLE ON A/P'S. THE AXIS OF THIS FEATURE IS OFFSET BY A FEW DEGREES FROM THAT OF THE TERRACES. THIS MAY BE THE SITE OF THE PRE-TUDOR MANOR HOUSE (B14).

A medieval and possibly post-medieval rectangular terrace is visible on historic aerial photograph and remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located about 230 metres NW of Ascott Manor and centred at SP 88717 22519, the slightly trapezoidal terrace or platform is about 68 to 72 metres at its widest point aligned NW-SE and 45 to 54 metres at its widest, aligned SW-NE. This has been identified as the possible site of the medieval manor at the location before the construction of Ascott House in the very late and early post-medieval periods and Wing Park. Although the orientation of the terrace is slightly is offset from the NNW-SSE aligned formal gardens immediately to its SE, it seems logical that this was also the location of (old) Ascott House, demolished following damage in the English Civil War and which remains unlocated, merely angled to align with the formal gardens. The terrace is only partially recorded on historic OS map editions but its full extent is clearly visible underlying field boundaries on aerial photographs dated 1944. About half of the area is now covered by a hedgerow and a newly grown square piece of (unnamed) woodland on aerial photographs taken in 2003, which remains extant in 2024 (17-23).
