  • ROAD (Roman - 43 AD to 409 AD)

Description

A layer of firm to indurated sub-rounded flint gravel in a silty clay matrix was identified within an evaluation trench. A sherd of late Roman pottery was recovered from within the layer. It is thought to represent the remains of a road, despite its thin, patchy and insubstantial nature, as gravel of this kind does not occur locally. See report for more detail (B1).
