Description

A market style cross on an octagonal pillar surmounted by a decorated, carved pinnacle. On a five stepped base with names on each clock face of the base, which go around in an anti-clockwise direction. On the 6 o'clock face of the pinnacle is Christ with St Mary and St John. On the 12 o'clock pinnacle is St George on horseback slaying the dragon.

The carvings on step one are dedicated to the men of the parish who were killed in action during WW1. The names of these men are carved on step two. On step five on the base are carved the names of of those killed in action during WW2 and the Korean War. Constructed on Portland stone and 518mm high. In poor condition. The Parish Council is fundraising to restore the memorial.

The memorial was designed by F D Howard and Messrs Axtell and Sons, architects and constructed by Thomas Yirrell, builder. The cost was £300 and the land upon which it stands was donated by the landowner, Lady Harriet Sarah Wantage, the wife of Baron Wantage. Permission was granted for this to be an extension to the churchyard. The community had originally decided to put up a drinking fountain for people and horses by the idea was changed to the current memorial. The memorial was unveiled on 5 December 1920 by Mr Anthony de Rothschild.
