Description

The Beaconsfield War Memorial is a stone shaft with Calvary relief surmounted by a gothic lantern designed by J O Cheadle and constructed by Messrs Woolridge & Simpson. The names of those killed in WW1 and WW2 are listed on bronze plaques affixed to the monument. The memorial was unveiled byField Marshall, Lord Grenfell in 1921 (B1).
Photograph and further details of the WWI casualities (B2).
Originally sited further north at mouth of Windsor End but moved in 1936 to make way for traffic roundabout. A Ianterne de morts -architect J.O. Cheadle of New Square, Lincolns Inn - builders Wooldridge & Simpson of Kidlington, Oxford. Unveiled in 1921 by Field Marshall Lord Grenfell (who lived at Butlers Court) (B3).
Beaconsfield War Memorial, like others of its kind, bears eloquent witness to the tremendous sacrifices made by local people in both World Wars - a testimony made more poignant by the several pairs of brothers listed among the fallen. While many local memorials employ standard designs, such as Reginald Blomfield's 'Cross of Sacrifice', Beaconsfield's is an accomplished one-off design based on medieval French prototypes, and its unusual appearance adds to its interest. The structure has been moved - not an uncommon circumstance - but it retains its integrity, and is still prominently located at the centre of the historic town, surrounded by numerous listed buildings including St Mary and All Saints' Church (Grade II+), Lloyds Bank and the Saracen's Head Hotel (both Grade II). For all these reasons, it clearly meets the criteria for designation. Listed at Grade II (B4).
