Description
The 'Old Vicarage' stables were converted into a Memorial Hall - a long low building with columns holding up a veranda along the front face. (Architect Sir Edwin Lutyens, Builder Messrs Bailey), with those killed in WW1 listed on a tablet - now lost. Albeit the Memorial Centre, (PRN 0729800000), was established in 1947 to commemorate those killed in WW2 a tablet listing those killed in both WW1 and WW2 was erected against the wall of the Memorial Hall beneath the veranda (B1).
The Memorial Hall became part of the Gerrards Cross Memorial Centre in 1947 (See PRN 0729800000, UKNIWM REF: 8282).
Also within the curtilage of the listed Gerrards Cross Memorial Centre. In 1922 the vicar gave the north lodge and stables for conversion into a village hall as a memorial to the men of Gerrards Cross who died in World War I. The carefully designed conversion is by Lutyens. Facing the Common the Memorial takes the form of a pavilion with a central tiled portico fronted by four Tuscan columns. A carved stone memorial tablet is on the back wall. To either side is a door leading to the pavilions rooms, with two sash windows with glazing bars to each front. The whole is in brick with carefully whitewashed panels leaving red bricks to look like quoins and window dressings. Deep slate covered roof of a relatively low pitch. This is a local building of note within the Consrvation area of Gerrards Cross (B2).
Listed grade II. War Memorial Hall for the benefit of the people of Gerrards Cross, 1922, by Sir Edwin Landseer Lutyens.
Reasons for Designation: - Historic interest: as an eloquent witness to the tragic impacts of world events on this community, and the sacrifices it made in the conflicts of the C20; - Architect: by the nationally renowned architect Sir Edwin Landseer Lutyens (1869-1944), who designed 58 memorials at home and abroad including the Cenotaph in Whitehall. This is his only memorial which is also a community facility; - Architectural interest: an elegant pavilion, its front elevation combining the English vernacular and classical traditions, with a handsome war memorial plaque; - Group value: with the Grade II-listed Gerrards Cross Memorial Centre alongside. See listing description for detail (B3).
