THE PLACENAME 'BOURTON' PERHAPS DERIVES FROM 'BURHTUN'; 'BURH' ELEMENT MAY BE FROM THE S OF 2 BURHS BUILT ON EITHER SIDE OF RIVER OUSE BY EDWARD THE ELDER (899-925) IN EARLY C10. IF SO, 'BURHTUN' MEANS 'FARM BY THE FORT' RATHER THAN FORTIFIED ENCLOSURE (B1). SEE CASS 0210. NGR TO RIVER BANK.
