Description

Portland stone obelisk 2 metres high on an elevated roadside platform reached by steps. There is a laural wreath on the front face. The memorial to Bishopstone residents who served in WW1 and WW2, was constructed by Messrs Newman and Harper, Builders. It was unveiled on 23 June 1922 by General Oxley. The names of those who served in WW1 are inscribed upon the monument, but there is simply a tribute to those who served in WW2 (B1).
Photographs of the monument and names of those who served during WW1 (B2).
Listed Grade II. The Bishopstone War Memorial, 1920, designed by the stonemasons Newman and Harper, is recommended for listing at Grade II, for the following principal reasons; - Historic interest: as an eloquent witness to the tragic impact of world events on the local community, and the sacrifice it made in the conflicts of the C20.- Design: unaltered bespoke memorial constructed with craftsmanship from a quality material (B3).
Stone war memorial set immediately adjacent to the road in the middle of Bishopstone. Raised on a stone plinth set within a grass bank, the memorial stands opposite the junction with Moreton Lane. This
monument is important due to its visual prominence and also due to its place within the social history of the village (B4).
