Description

A renaissance style cross on two stepped base and raised dias reached by three steps - surrounded by a chain link fence. Bronze sprays of laurel in the angles of the shaft. Bronze victory wreath at junction of the arms of the cross. Inscription is in leaded lettering. Whilst the memorial commemorates those killed in both WW1 and WW2, the individual names are recorded on the walls of the neighbouring parish church, [CAS 0715100000]. The memorial was designed by T Hansford-White & W Henry White, (Architects), built by E Harris with the metal work produced by the Joseph Whitehead & Sons Foundry. The memorial was unveiled by General Sir G W A Higginson in July 1920 (B1).

Grade II. First World War memorial, with additions following the Second World War, designed by T Hansford-White and W Henry Wright, unveiled in 1920. Reasons for Designation: Historic interest - as a symbol of the great impact made by the First and Second World Wars on local communities, and as a focal point for remembrance; Architectural interest - an unusual variation on a cruciform design, enriched with moulded stone and bronze; Group value - with the Grade II+ listed Church of All Saints, in which the Rolls of Honour are inscribed, and a number of other listed buildings and items of street furniture (B3).
