The remains of an embankment or entrenchment c 300 feet long are visible in place called Pitch Green, about 1/2 mile North of Stewkley church (ie in area SP 853270). Location of 'Pitch Green' not known by Eland, but he confirm Sheahan's Civil War suggestion. There was trouble near here (at Swanbourne SP 8027) in 1643 (B3).
The name "Pitch Green" is not known. According to local farm workers the supposed site of the earthworks was in a field centred at SP 854 272, but all that is visible is pronounced rig and furrow and old gravel workings. No other features were found in the locality (B4).
