Description

Former Science and Art School, opened 1893. Originally built as a Science and Art school from the proceeds of beer tax and fund raising in the town. Later became the High Wycombe Technical Institute teaching many of the towns furniture manufacturers and designers. In 1901 the trustees allowed girls to be taught and this continued until 1906 when the girls moved to premises in Benjamin Road ultimately becoming Wycombe High School. Rest of the school moved to Easton Street premises. In 1929 the building was converted into swimming baths and in 1946 it became the towns Repertory Theatre.
2 storey building with tower and decorative gable details in an Elizabethan style. Of dark red brick with lighter brick pilaster details and window headers. Carved brick stringcourses with terracotta dentil details. Dutch style gables to roadside elevation with terracotta finial details. Decorative chimney stack. The main feature is the clock tower which faces onto Frogmoor. Three storeys, the clock encased in red brick roundel, topped with an ogee lead roof. The building is dominant in views across Frogmoor. Proposed for inclusion on Wycombe District Council local list (B1).
