Description

Evaluation trial trenching carried out by Thames Valley Archaeological Services in May 2011 found a ditch 2.2m wide and 0.6m deep, aligned NE-SW, with sloping sides and stepped base and fills containing late 11th to 12th century pottery, animal bone, charred cereal grain and a possible iron weight. A shallow gully over 3.5m long, 1m wide and 0.22m deep, aligned NW-SE with sloping sides and flat base and fill containing late 11th to 12th century pottery, fired clay, animal bone and charred cereal grain, and a shallow undated pit or scoop 0.6m in diameter and 0.07m deep with gently sloping sides were also found. The ditch and gully are interpreted as medieval boundaries at the rear of a property fronting onto the High Street. See report for detail (B1).
