Description

Probable eighteenth or nineteenth century milestone on A413 in Chalfont St Peter south of junction on Gravel Hill. Recorded as present in 2003 on Milestones Society website on Uxbridge to Amersham route National ID number BU_LC21. 38cm wide, 32cm wide, 49 cm high, on east side of road. Condition described as 'On ivy covered bank, with layers of old paint'. Not on current OS map but on County First edition1:2500 1876-1885. Inscription: front: LONDON 21 CHALFONT ST PETER . [Detailed description, location and photograph] (B1).
Milestone shown on 1814 OS draft surveyors drawing and 1835 OS 1-inch county map (sheet 48). Inscription: 'London: 21'. On Amersham to Denham (C2) route. 4-sided stone with flat face parallel to road. Bottom of hill (Waggon and Horses). No mention of milestones in Turnpike Trust minutes until 1808, when minutes record that Mr Herring is to be paid when '[mile]stones properly and rightly spelt, are placed'. In 1823 John King instructed to measure the turnpike road and prepare a map or plan for use of the Trustees [See T3/51- P.R.O.]. In 1829 'Proper hand posts' to be put up in Aylesbury and elsewhere with distances marked on thereon. In January 1834 the clerk to 'write to the Clerk of Oak Lane Trust stating that various improvements by shortening the road have been made and the Trustees, presuming that similar improvements have been made on the Oak Lane Trust, wish to be informed whether the milestoness on the Oak Lane Trust have been placed accurately from the last mile-stone on the Oxford Road….'
