Type and Period (1)

  • DONKEY WHEEL (19th Century - 1800 AD? to 1899 AD?)

Description

Remains of an animal-powered treadwheel or gin at the east side of the farmhouse. The rotating capstan survives at the centre of a circular paved area, thought to be too small for a horse, so presumably powered by a donkey. The horizontal driveshaft entered the adjacent dairy through a hole in the brick wall and the remains of a drivebelt and machinery survive in the dairy (B1).
Likely to date from the mid 19th century (B2).
