Description

Evaluation trial trenching carried out in October 2007 by Thames Valley Archaeological Services found medieval and post-medieval pits, posthole, gullies, structural remains of a former building (retained in-situ) and a probable former stream channel. In trench 1 a medieval flat-bottomed pit 0.61m deep and a possible medieval posthole 0.41m in diameter and 0.25m deep with step sides and a concave base were recorded. Medieval pottery suggests that activity on the site was restricted to the later 11th and 12th centuries and that the site may have been abandoned by the 13th century. Post-medieval occupation comprised the remains of a former building on the street frontage (trench 1), possibly of two phases, and possibly the building shown on maps from the late 18th century onwards. Other late post-medieval and modern pits, shallow gullies and a drain were also recorded in trenches 2 and 5. In trenches 3 and 4 a series of silty deposits 0.89m-1.09m thick were interpretted as a former stream channel which had been infilled in the 19th century prior to the stream being realligned and culverted. See report for detail (B2).
NGR to trench 1.
During the medieval period, 11th to 13th century, the partially in-filled channel was formally straightened out. Several pits containing sherds of 11-13th century pottery are further indication of activity during this period. It appears that this site was abbandoned, potentially as early as the mid 13th century. Townsend site showed similar decline in the 13th century (B3)
