A linear boundary bank and ditch of a probable late medieval/post medieval deer park is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located in on the W and S side of a field immediately S of Fairfields and the former manor house of Lower Burston and centred at SP 83858 18611, a linear earthwork bank that varies between 5.5 and 10 metres wide extends N-S for along a fields W boundary for 180 metres into the field’s SW corner, turning ENE along the field’s s facing boundary for a further 317 metres in five broken sections. A linear boundary ditch up to 3 metres wide flanks the outside of the S facing bank. A deer park covered some 650,000 square metres (65 hectares) and
included the area of the adjacent medieval deserted village, clearly
shown on a map of the Manor of Burston dating from c.1800. The earthworks of
the deer park pale have since disappeared, although the original outline of the park can be traced in the current field boundaries surrounding the farm. The linear bank feature may represent an internal division within the deer park, to separate the deer from the former gardens located around the house (18-21).
