Remains of a medieval shrunken village overlaid with post medieval extraction is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located in a field immediately W of St Mary Magdalene Church in Iupper Winchendon and centred at SP 74388 14454, the earthworks extends across an area about 335 metres SW-NE and 265 metres NW-SE. In the upper half of the field and covering the NE quarter are small blocks of ridge and furrow cultivation earthworks. These sandwich narrow linear earthwork banks and ditches aligned SW-NE that may have been a trackway through the field system. In the NW quarter of the field is a linear ditch about 150 metres NNW-SSE and up to 16 metres wide WSW-ENE that may have formed fishponds. Extending perpendicular from both the W and E sides of this are further ditches. A subrectangular earthwork bank enclosing an area about 28 x 21 metres suggest a possible dwelling plot. From the NW a sinuous double ditch extends about 250 metres along the W side of the site that may have also been a hollow way or trackway. Another probable trackway or hollow way extends SW for about 500 metres around blocks of ridge and furrow. In the S half of the field it has been suggested that post medieval extraction took place. This seems to be borne out by the amorphous swathe of hollows, ditches, banks, and mounds that do not seem to form any coherent pattern. If there are any medieval features amongst these earthworks, it was not possible to identify them (6-9).
