Description

Found in wooded scrubland near Gerrard's Cross by Mr R D Davies. Penny of William II type V of the Oxford mint. Coins incompleteness makes it impossible to identify the moneyer. A coin of the type in the Hunterian Museum of which the moneyer is Aelnoth, is struck from different dies. Another moneyer, Aegelric, is also known to have struck for William II in type II, and for Henry I at Oxford. Such coins are rare (B1).
NB: CAS card records date of find as November 1975 and locates the approximate find spot, but the finder's sketch map shows a different location and the correspondence from the BM is dated 26th September 1975.
