Description
POSSIBLE VILLA ON SUMMIT OF COBBLERS HILL (00:001,00:003)(B1).
IRON AGE AND ROMAN MATERIAL FROM GARDEN OF HOUSE IN KING'S LANE INCLUDING DOMESTIC AND BUILDING DEBRIS AND SLAG (00:001-002; 004-007; 01:000)(B2-B3).
BUILDING, POSS LATE C1 OR EARLIER START, LONG OCCUPATION INTO C4 (B4-B5).
J HEAD DUG TRENCH - NO SUCCESS (B6).
1st-4th century AD pottery, box and roofing tile, iron slag (confirmed by metallurgical analysis) and part of a bronze earring have been found mainly scattered throughout the subsoil between the late G E H Rawlins' house in King's Lane Great Missenden and the hedge and fence which form the southern boundary (SP 87410297 - see map). In the opinion of Dr Phillip Corder the collection (now in Bucks Museum Acc No 149.61) represents the depris of a nearby Roman building occupied for centuries. The amount of slag recovered is now unknown but in Rawlins' opinion the site was primarily a Roman iron bloomery. The aspect is suitable and compares in situation with a possible site at Dundridge (SP 90 NW 4). Two large hollows situated on either grass verge of King's Lane, adjoining Rawlin's property may be contemporary and connected with the site (B5 and B7).
About 10 lbs weight of 1st to 4th century pottery, some 20 pieces of iron slag and 10 pieces of roofing and floor tile are held by Bucks County Museum (B8).
