- MAZE (17th Century to 18th Century - 1600 AD to 1799 AD)
Description
Plan Form - CIRCULAR
The prominence given to it in the estate map of Chequers in 1629 suggests that this was a labyrinth or maze of recent construction. On an estate map of 1739, still preserved in the house, it is marked and titled "The Maze". A letter dated 1702 in which the writer mentions 'trying his legs at the Maze' would suggest that this was constructed for recreational pleasure (2). PERHAPS ANCIENT STONES, PERHAPS A GRASS MAZE, PERHAPS AN EARLY SHAM CIRCLE (BI3).
(SP 83900588) Druid Maze (NAT) (B4).
Ploughed out, no trace (B5).
