Description
DISCOVERED IN MAKING NEW BUNKER GREEN NO. 8 & ANOTHER BUNKER TO N. EXCAVATED BY A H COCKS. CLAIMS EXAMPLES OF 'PIT DWELLINGS' (B1).
COMPARED WITH CONTEMPORARY SITE AT BLEDLOW (B4).
Iron Age storage pits of the Little Woodbury type (B3) were discovered on the golf course at Ellesborough, in 1907, during the construction of a new bunker known as "Green No 8" (Golf Course centred at SP 845067). A quantity of animal bones and pottery sherds were revealed in a circular hole, about 6'6" deep and 7'6" in diameter, immediately at, and below a slight ridge which is possibly the remains of an old hedge bank, roughly parallel to, and at the base of, Combe Hill. The second site where similar finds were made was situated on the lower side of the ridge, about ten yards further south towards the Club House in Combe Hamlet. Pottery dated by R A Smith to the 3rd or 4th C BC. In 1908 half a dozen pieces of pottery intermingled with a few flint flakes, not more than 2'6" below the surface, were discovered while making another bunker to the north. Classed by R A Smith as Neolithic domestic ware (B1 and B3).
