Summary

Roman cremation found levelling ground: A 3rd century Roman cremation was found in 1937 during excavations for the construction of a garden one hundred yards north of the church, near the site of the Bishops Place. Finds included pottery, hob nails and human bones.

Description

LARGE COARSEWARE URN CONTAINING BURNT HUMAN BONE, FINE EARTH, CHARCOAL, IRON FRAGMENTS, SMALL BLACK POT. NOT EARLIER THAN MID C3AD. REMAINS OF ADULT FEMALE. FOUND BY MR H MONTEFIORE & MR E C ROUSE IN LEVELLING GROUND FOR GARDEN OF NEW HOUSE IN 1937 (B1- 3). IRON FRAGS IDENTIFIED AS HOB-NAILS (B2).

A 3rd century Roman cremation was found in 1937 during excavations for the construction of a garden a few hundred yards N of the church, near the site of the Bishops Place (or
Manor House). (SU776912).

A large urn was found c 2 ft below the surface, containing burnt human bones, together with some iron hob-nails and a small black vessel. The finds have been loaned to the Bucks
County Museum, Aylesbury. (B2).

The cremation urn was presumably found in the landscaped garden within the grounds of Fingest Manor (SU 7755 9125) which was built in 1937. The precise find-spot cannot be ascertained, and the present owner knows nothing of the finds. (B4)
