Greenstone axe (B5)
[Area centred TQ 04528054] A polished greenstone axe was found in the bed of the Colne Brook, a tributary of the River Colne, near the eastern boundary of the parish of Iver, by W.S.M. Whitehead of Slough. The exact spot cannot now be determined, but a position on the stream about 150 yards south of the Grand Junction Canal and near the footbridge marked on the O.S. 6" 1932 [at TQ 0452 8049] is reasonably accurate. The axe was 132 mm long 62 mm. wide at the edge, and 37 mm. thick. Petrological identification by Dr. Wallis of Bristol suggests that the material of the axe may have come from a greenstone deposit on the coast of Cornwall. The axe is still in Mr. Whitehead's possession (B1).
