J G MARSDEN COLLECTED MANY TOOLS & POLLEN SAMPLES FROM GRAVEL WORKINGS AT SANDSTONE UP TO 1938. AFTER THIS, A D LACAILLE CONTINUED WORK ON THE SITE. PEATY LAYERS OVERLAID THE GRAVEL, AND FINDS CAME FROM THE TOP OF GRAVEL & THE LOWER PEAT. MAGLEMOSEAN ASSEMBLAGE PRESENT. (FULL DETAILS) (B1-3).
Sandstone is another mesolithic site which is relatively close to the proposed Orange Route of the M25. Excavations have been carried out in the past, but these have not been systematic (B4).
Mesolithic implements have been found over the years at Sandstone. Pre-war finds were revealed during commercial gravel-quarrying. Later, samples were found in holes dug for the foundations of the Central Electricity Authority sub-station which now occupies the site. The site, at TQ 044836, lies between 100 and 103 feet above OD on the north side of the A4007 from Uxbridge to Slough, 200 yds west of Lambourne House and the Long Bridge, immediately beyond the lower end of Cherry Tree Lane. The output from this site is identical with the flint artifacts from Rikof's pit, Broxbourne, Herts (TL 30 NE 10) which are typically Maglemosean (B1).
No further information on finds. The generating station is centred at TQ 043836 (B5).
TQ 044 836. One light tranchet axe, 14 cores, 250 unretouched flakes/blades, 8 scrapers, one graver, 15 microliths and one microburin. IN the British Museum (B2).
