Description
Beyond 23a Walton Street, facing onto Exchange Street, are the former County Police Headquarters. Built in 1939 by C. H. Riley, the buildings are attractively detailed with overtures of Art Deco. Like the County Offices the former County Police Headquarters possess a character and flamboyance that qualify them as buildings of local note. This is a Building of Note within the Conservation Area of Aylesbury (B1).
Former County Police Headquarters by C H Riley, 1935. Next to his County Offices but slightly later and more Art Deco (B2).
Red and brown brick in flemish bond with reconstituted stone details beneath a grey slate roof. Front elevation is symetrical with seven bays. The outer two being in slightly wider projecting bays with raised central parapets. Main enrance in the left hand bay with a simple stone surround. This surround was mimicked on the right hand window bay which included the 1935 above. The three central windows are rounded with enlarged key stone. First floor windows are all multi-pane casement windows located immediately beneath the windows. REAR ELEVATION: Much simpler with concrete lintels and sill to the windows and no decorative features. Building extends north in a narrower single storey range accomodating former cells. High small barred windows, and an enclosed yard. (B3).
Former Aylesbury Police Station and Constabulary Headquarters, designed by the County Architect, C H Riley and built by Webster & Cannon. Opened in 1935. Two detached brick built buildings of two storeys and seven bays with stone detailing and hipped slate roofs. South-western building lies at
junction of Exchange Street and Walton Street with angled corner with pedimented window. Main southeast elevation organised 1:2:1:2:1 with
projecting bays at either end and central pedimented door with large window above projecting into a parapet wall. Northeast building organised 1:1:3:1:1 with projecting bays with adjacent doors to either end and three square headed windows with arches over to centre. Vehicular entrance between buildings with matching gate piers. The building contained on completion the county headquarters, recreation rooms and police station with accommodation for inspector, superintendent and four single constables. Recently bought by Council and future reuse or demolition not yet decided.
