Description

In general buildings along Well Street are situated hard up to the back edge of the pavement and follow the bends of the road, but there are examples such as nos. 16 and 17, Well Street and the Well Street Centre, where buildings are located back from the pavement. Most buildings situated along Well Street are terraced, forming stretches of unbroken street frontage. However, there are also examples of detached or semi-detached properties such as nos. 16 and 17, 44, 62 and 63, Well Street and the Well Street Centre. This is a local building of note within the Conservation Area of Buckingham (B1).
Watching brief carried out by Mike Farley in 2008 during groundworks at the rear of 16 Well Street, recorded the stone party wall between the gardens of No 16 and 17 above a darker layer (Deposit 1) identified as backfill of the footing trench for the wall. Below this Deposit 2 abuts the rear wall of 16 Well Street and fills much of the section (approx 1m thick). It contains small angular pieces of limestone. Probably the backfill of a foundation trench dug to accommodate the wall of number 16. See report for detail (B2).
