  • VILLA? (Roman - 43 AD to 409 AD)

Description

AN IRON AGE COIN (01:000) ALONG WITH MANY ROMAN COINS (02:000) SUGGEST EXISTANCE OF A VILLA (B3).
THE SITUATION ONLY 365 METRES FROM RIVER ON A GENTLE SLOPE, IS CLEARLY SUITABLE FOR A VILLA (B8).
In 1899 it was reported in The Home Counties Magazine that some Roman coins and 'other remains' were discovered when the cricket ground at Chalfont St Peter was being enlarged. The article stated: 'But these would not necessarily imply more than the existence of a solitary villa, and that more than half a mile from the village.' The O.S. Archaeology Division has reported that many Roman coins of various dates were found during this same excavation of the cricket ground (B10).
