Description
Terrace of small cottages, some with surviving shop fronts. 19th century in date. Both buildings are of brick with a shallow pitched slate roof and brick chimneys, although number 29 has been partially rendered. Windows are traditional sliding sashes. Number 27 has been sympathetically renovated, and split into a number of smaller units. The buildings are clearly visible in views up and down the High Street, and are an important element of the street scene. This is a local building of note within the Conservation Area of Winslow (B1).
27 High Street was formerly the Three Pigeons inn, dating from the mid 18th century. Red brick with vitreous headers and red brick dressings to windows and quoins. Slate roof. Looks 18th century? 19th century shop front to right hand bay, now a video shop. Cart entry to right (B2).
Parts of the High Street were rebult after the great fire of 1775. This started at the Three Pigeons (B3).
The fire of 1775 started elsewhere (the Three Pigeons at 22 High Street)(B4).
