Description

No archaeological features or deposits were identified during the watching brief. The base pier of the original railway footbridge was the only feature considered to be of interest. No dating evidence was recovered, but as the station building was constructed in 1863 it is suggested that the footing dates to around this time. The area within the site footprint appears to have been heavily truncated, possibly as a result of the construction of the multi-storey car park and supermarket in the area. The construction of the railway also removed the upper layers of the original ground surfaces onto the natural clay horizons, as did the construction of the former Schwatzkopf factory (B1).
