Type and Period (1)
- FARMSTEAD (Middle Iron Age - 400 BC to 101 BC)
Description
Geophysical survey and evaluation trial trenching carried out by Northants Archaeology in August and September 2006 identified an area of Iron Age settlement ('Block B'), with a circular roundhouse or stock enclosure, ditches, gullies, small pits and postholes along with several spreads of occupation debris. Only 1 negative trial trench was excavated on the Buckinghamshire side of the boundary with Milton Keynes (B3).
'Block B' was excavated between June and August 2007 by Northants Archaeology. Three phases of a small Middle Iron Age farmstead comprising 2-3 roundhouses, hearths, pits, enclosures and drainage ditches was found, along with evidence of associated pastural farming and environmental evidence suggesting that the farmstead continued to operate in a period of deteriorating climate with increasing flooding and was finally abandoned when the valley bottom became marshland. See report for detail (B5).
