Description
Evaluation trial trenching carried out in August and September 2006 by Archaeological Solutions revealed a steep sided ditch, three postholes and two pits or postholes which could form part of a prehistoric structure in Trench 69. A further parallel shallow ditch or gully in Trench 67 about 100m to the south could indicate an associated enclosure. One of the postholes contained an Iron Age pottery sherd and burnt stone, another contained Iron Age pottery and slag and one of the pits/postholes contained a large quantity of early Iron Age pottery and burnt stone. Generally across the rest of the evaluation site the ceramic evidence suggests late Iron Age activity through to the mid 2nd century AD, although datable finds for these periods were only recovered in small quantities and the pottery was highly abraded, consistent with land in long term agricultural use rather than settlement. See report for detail (B1).
