Description

Sections of a main north-south wall were noted during archaeological investigation. The visible brickwork has no consistent bond but with the upper brickwork of stretcher and header courses, in a few places there were courses of headers on edge. At all points it appears that the brickwork is on a chalk clunch foundation some 0.70<0.80m wide and 0.60m deep which had been built fully or partly in to a trench cut into the naturalas there was no evidence of trench sides outside the foundation. An apparent return was uncovered at the south end of this wall. What was visible was solid brickwork over chalk clunch. A possible north return was also uncovered, consisting of a very substantial structure with solid brickwork (B1).
