Description

Maps in a 'Survey of the Mansion House and Pleasure Grounds at Hartwell together with several farms…Sir William Lee 1777' (BRO: D/X 1045/1) show 'Short Tetlow' and 'Long Tetlow' adjacent to Standal's Farm on SE (SP 816 102). In CAS 0677 is a map ?by Gurney with a note referrinig to the same area 'This hill is almost certainly...Tetlow (Tottelowe in 1345)' and 'Tetlow open field belonged to Southcote'. The placename could indicate a Saxon burial although the 'tot' element can also indicate a look out point in Old English (B1).
