Description

Three trenches were excavated during evaluation at the rear of 27-29 High Street/Jasmine Crescent, Princes Risborough. Two pits large pits were identified within the trenches. The earliest pit contained fragments of trailed slipware, dating to the 17th century and Red Earthenware, dating to the 16th-19th century. The later pit contained a large amount of 19th-20th century glass bottles, White Earthenware sherds and metal objects. The site is marked as a garden on late 19th and early 20th century OS mapping, suggesting that the pits had been filled in by this point.
An undated ditch terminal was also noted parallel to the rear of the properties fronting the High Street. A possible similar feature was noted within the earlier of the two pits. These two ditches are at right angles to one another and may represent early burgage plot divisions. A further linear feature containing 19th-20th century pottery was noted to the at the southern end fo the site. This feature was likely associated with the construction of the garages that mark the southern boundary of the site (B1).
