Description

Plan Form - Linear
Marked on historic maps. Jefferys' 1770 map only shows the Icknield Way between Tring and Dunstable, with the route appearing to follow an earlier line SE around Ivinghoe Beacon. OS 2-inch surveyor's drafts show both Upper and Lower Icknield Ways, with the route (here marked 'Roman Road') following the earlier line SE around Ivinghoe Beacon. Bryant's 1825 map shows the Upper Icknield Way (Lower Icknield Way not shown), with the route appearing to follow the later diversions NW around Little Kimble church and NW around Ivinghoe Beacon. The 1st edition 6-inch and 25-inch OS maps show the route following the earlier line SE of Little Kimble church but the later diversion NW of Ivinghoe Beacon (B1-4).
Dating and course of prehistoric trackway briefly discussed (B5).
An important routeway between Wesses and East Anglia, with a band of tracks following the Chiltern scarp just above the springline and marked today reasonably closely by the bridleways and paths of the Upper Icknield Way (B6).
Notes on possible routes across the Risborough, Wendover and Berkhampstead gaps (B7).
Existence of the Icknield Way as a long-distance Prehistoric routeway suggested to be a creation of medieval chroniclers, mythologised by later writers (B8).
NGRs derived from route as shown on 1st edition 6-inch and 25-inch OS maps.
