Description
Geophysical surveys carried out by Pre-Construct Geophysics in February and March 2008 in advance of proposed housing development failed to identify any archaeological anomalies (B2).
Subsequent evaluation trial trenching carried out by Cotswold Archaeology in April and May 2008 identified two shallow post-medieval clay pits, at least one of which (shown as a pond on the 1880 1st edition 25-inch OS map) had been deliberately back-filled with brick and tile rubble in the 20th century. A cluster of 67 stakeholes appeared to be associated with a shallow ditch and gully both of which were parallel to the existing field boundary and interpreted as a former field boundary. A 19th or 20th century robbed-out boundary wall foundation was also recorded, but no remains were found of a terrace of four cottages shown on the 1853 tithe map. See report for detail (B3).
