Description

Watching brief carried out by AS&C in July, September and October 2009 during groundworks for a rear extension identified a probable medieval posthole with vertical sides and flat base, 0.4m in diameter and 0.3m deep, with finds of late 14th century decorated floor tiles within the fills. The only other features identified were the remains of an insubstantial wall footing of angular flint in a sandy mortar, aligned NW-SE, probably post-medieval in date but not aligned with the existing buildings on the site, and a ditch or robber trench 0.65m wide and 1.25m deep, aligned NNW-SSE, with fragments of undiagnostic roof tile, bone and post-medieval glazed red earthenware and bottle glass recovered from the fill. See report for detail (B1).
