Confirmed by handwritten notes were in Bucks County Museum now in Centre for Bucks Studies " two further milestones used as gateposts at Flackwell Heath. Under red F Mrs Smith ,The Pightle, Great Kimble 06.02.87. [Sample illustration and handwritten notes] (B2).
According to Peter Gullands extensive study of The Toll Roads of Buckinghamshire 1706-1881 2017 and their connectons into neighbouring counties these milestone were originally on The Reading and Hatfield Turnpike Road p.175 road 13.This road connected market towns but it has now disentegrated into several B and A roads. During WW2 the mile markers through out the county were taken away and in some cases not returned or put in wrong place. This is an early form and they may predate the trust ? down to Lord Cecil and his gout route. Peter Gulland refutes this name as folk lore as he can find no early historical references to this name. Early in the 18th century milestones were replaced twice the last time by Wilder and Sons of Reading. 3 of these metal posts survive in Buckinghamshire. One of 116 out of 230 possible milemarkers from historical evidence left in Bucks. After the trusts closed in 1880s and 1890s on some roads highway authorities parish or district or county replaced missing or damaged milemarkers with what the Milestones Sociey calls Bucks Pressings metal posts with white faces and black writing. [Copy in HER] (B3).
