Description

Eighteenth or nineteenth century milestone on A40 at Wilton Park near Sandy Bottom Lodge in Chalfont St Peter parish. Recorded as present in 2001 on Uxbridge to Stokenhurch route National ID number BU_LW22. 45cm wide, 39cm deep, 93cm high, on north side of road. Inscription: left: London 22 Oxford 32 : front: Uxbridge 7. Carved benchmark on mid left side. Moss and lichen on top. [Detailed description, location and photograph] (B1).
Shown on 1835 1-inch OS map (sheet XLVIII). Inscription: Beaconsfield 1 Uxbridge 7 London 22. On Beaconsfield to Denham route. Shown on 1788 Jefferys' and 1825 Bryant county maps as Milestone 16 (numbered from West Wycombe to Bushey Leys). Also shown on 1814 OS surveyor's draft drawing. Milestone shown on current OS map (B2).
According to Peter Gullands extensive study The Toll Roads of Buckinghamshire 1706-1881 with their connections into neighbouring countes 2017. This was on The Beaconsfield and Stokenchurch Turnpike Road 1719 page 91 road 4. Mostly A40 today to Oxford from west end of Beaconsfield old town to west end of Stokenchuurch. Important route from London. Milestones put up along this road in 1744 Jeffereys map recorded 13 from london 24 just west of of Beaconsfield old town at angleto road To London 29 in centre of High Wycome which has been missing for some time. They were engraved mileages in Roman numerals then reworked easier to see sometime after 1744. Modern 112 milemarkers records out a possible 230 from old sources according PG in Bucks. During WW2 through out country milemarkers were buried or removed fpr secuity reasons sometimes not returned correctly. After the tolls roads closed in 1880s and 1890s missing milemarkes on some roads were replaced with the Milestones Society called Bucks Pressings standard metal posts with 2 white faces and black inscriptions.
