Description

Eighteenth or ninetenth century milestone on A40 in Gerrards Cross at junction with Bulstrode Way near Rocky Dell. Milestone 20 on London to Worcester route, recorded as present in 2002 (BU_LW20). On north side of road, 43cm high. [Photograph, description and location] (B1).
Shown on 1835 1-inch OS county map (sheet XLVIII). Inscription: Beaconsfield 3 Uxbridge 5 London 20. On Beaconsfield to Denham route. 1825 Bryant county map - milestones 16-34 marked from West Wycombe to Bushey Leys; 1788 Jefferys county map - milestones 16-34 marked; 1835 1-inch OS map - milestones 16-37 marked (alteration of county boundary) (B2).
According to Peter Gullands extensive study of The Toll Roads of Buckinghamshire 1706-1881 with their connections into neighbouring counties 2017 this is on The Beaconsfield and Stokenchurch Turnpike Road p.91 road 4. During WW2 milmakers throuhghou the county were moved for security reasons ometimes not put back in right place or not replaced at ali.aafter the trusts closed in 18800s or 1890s parish county or district replacd missing milemarkers on some roads with stanard metal posts that milestones society calls Bucks Presings with 2 whit faces and black paint. This was an importnt Mediaval routr fconecting London and Midlands mostly A20 today strethes from west en of Beaconsfield Old Town to west end of Stokenchurch Village. According to PG this one of 116 modern reciords in bucks out of 230 milemarkers from old sources. This trust 121/2 miles ong now all in Bucks. Mising milemrker in Wycombe Oxford 25 London 29 on little Market house wall. They were stone anlgled to road with Roman inscriptions on 2 faces 13 were in place by 11744 then sometime 1fter 1744 they were turned and reincibed wih arabic numetrals. 9 aurvive.
