Description
Skeletons found in Hayman's Pit, a sand-pit at Shipton by Mr Walker whilst working in the pit in about 1930 (B1-2).
Site under gardens/allotments and nothing visible (B3).
Pit is first shown on 1920s 6-inch OS map at the western edge of the field and had been extended to the east by the late 1940s or early 1950s. It appears to have gone out of use by 1947 (B4).
Geophysical survey carried out by Bartlett-Clark Consultancy in 2008 produced anomalies indicating heavy disturbance suggesting the presence of a backfilled former quarry (B5).
NGR to centre of pit.
An extractive pit of modern date is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and was/were mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located at Shipton, Winslow and centred at SP 77686 27418. L shaped extractive pit visible to the rear of houses to the west of Shipton and on the north of Sheep Street as it leaves Winslow heading East (A413). (6-8)
