Description
Probable burnt mound in bank of River Chess identified by Chess Valley Archaeological and Historical Society whilst surveying in 2007. Trial trenching carried out in November 2008 confirmed the presence of a mound or bank of burnt flint and charcoal at least 0.5m high and 1.7m wide, overlying a deposit of sandy silt and gravel with quartzite cobbles. A small number of worked flints, Late Bronze Age pottery sherds and burnt bone fragments were recovered. Analysis of the sandy silt deposit suggested it was laid down in a moderately high-energy river system, probably a braided river, and formed a sand island with little or no vegetation. See reports for detail (B1-2).
