Description
Trial trenching carried out by Albion Archaeology in May 2009 in advance of redevelopment of site for a new Crown Court complex identified 2 intercutting boundary ditches aligned NW-SE, one 1.8m wide and 1.17m deep, the other 1.4m wide and 1.1m deep. A small oval pit 1.9m long and 0.35m deep cut both ditches. A probable oval pond 1.05m deep and measuring at least 7.5m X 1.8m was also found. All features appeared to have been deliberately backfilled in the twentieth century. A layer of compacted brick rubble may have resulted from the demolition of a terrace of 19th century houses that previously stood on part of the site before the construction of the Equitable Life office block. See report for detail (B1).
NGR to Trench 1.
Watching brief negative (B3).
