Description

Watching brief carried out in May 2009 by John Moore Heritage Services during groundworks for a house extension recorded four post-medieval pits containing pottery beneath 0.4m of 19th century subsoil. 2 rounded pits, both approximately 1.1m in diameter, 1 containing 17th century pottery, the other undated but probably contemporary, were cut by a third rounded pit 1.2m in diameter and containing late 17th century pottery. A rectangular pit at least 1.5m X 0.95m contained 18th century pottery. The pottery recovered from the uppermost pit fills comprises a mixture of utilitarian pottery and fine tablewares, local products along with regional imports, mainly from Staffordshire and is typical of a fairly well-to-do household of the 17th to 18th century. The pits were not excavated and remain in-situ. See report for detail (B1).
