Description

Probable eighteenth to nineteenth century cast iron milepost on Buckingham to Brill road in Wotton Underwood parish on Kingswood Lane by Long Wood. Recorded by P.N.Jarvis [ Bletchley Archaeological and Historical Society ] in January 1965. One of 12 recorded on this road. Painted figures. Recorded as present in 2003 on Milestones Society website in 2010 national ID number BU_BRBU03 on Brill to Buckingham route. On verge between roads on Kingswood Lane on east side of unclassified road. 119cm high, 52cm wide, 25cm deep. Inscription differs from that recorded in 1965 : left: BRILL 3: right: BUCKINGHAM 13. Confirmed by handwritten notes including field surveys mostly in 1980s under " MILE POSTS BUCKINGHAM to BRILL (Max Davies only )". NGR : 674 166 : Parish : Brill : number on 1" OS none : Information : Good : metal milepost : clear painted letters : illus as over + sketch ( Brill 3 Buck - 13 ). Illustration annotated : Metal mile posts on Buckingham to Brill road. No makers name. All similar design. See also rough sketches. Parish on top mileage to Brill on L face Buckingham on R face. In Peter Gullands extensive study of The Toll Roads of Bukinghamshire 1706-1881 with their conections into neighbouring ounties p.29 2017. This road was never turnpiked so local highway authorities put up these standardised metal posts with 2 white faces and black lettering facing traffic called Bucks Pressings by milestones society. Dates fom 1880s or 1890s just after end of turnpike era this important road went through Grendon Underwood.T hese metal posts replaced missing mile markers on other roads especially in north of county much easier to read than some standard milemarkers.
