Description
Probable eighteenth to nineteenth century metal milepost in Kingswood Road Wotton Underwood. Confirmed by Milestones Society website recorded as present in 2003 in 2010. National ID number BU-BRBU04 on Brill to Buckingham Route. On east side side of unclassified road. Difficult to record in V in hedge. 96cm high: 52cm wide: 28cm deep.Inscription difficult to read: L Brill 4: R Buckingham 12: Wotton Underwood on top. On current OS not on " All Historical Database". Confirmed by handwritten notes including some field surveys in the 1980s under: " MILE POSTS. BUCKINGHAM to BRILL. ( Max Davies only )". NGR: 684 177: parish: Wooton Number on 1" OS 1835: none. Information: Good: metal mile post: painted letters all clear. Illustration as over ( Brill 4 Buck- 12 ). Illustration annotated: Metal mile posts on Buckingham to Brill road. No makers name. All similar design. Brill on L Buckingham on R parish on top. [ Handwritten notes consulted ] (B2).
In Peter Gullands extensive study of The Toll Roads Buckinghamshire 1706 -1881 with their
connections ino neighouring couunties 2017 p,27. This important road between Brill and Buckingham through Grendon Underwood was never tunpiked. After the tusts closed in 1880s or 1890s highway authorities county or district or parish put standardised metal posts in place on this road, Two white faces with black paint lettering all along thsroad that the Milestones Society calls Bocks Pressings. The advance of techogy mading reading these much asier they were put on some roads that hasd missing milemarkes throgout the county.Commoner in north of county. During WW2 milemarkers through out the conty were removwe or buried for seuity reasons sometimes not repaced or pu back in same place. According to PG this one of 116 modern records out possible 230 in Bucks from old sources. This pressings could rot at bottom easily knocked over. [Copy in HER] (B3
