Description

Probable eighteenth to nineteenth century cast iron milepost on Buckingham to Brill road north of village of Grendon Underwood. Just before Hall Cottages on OS map. Recorded by P.N.Jarvis [ Bletchley Archaeological and Historical Society ] in Jan 1965. One of 12 on this road. Painted figures. Inscription: BUCKINGHAM 8: BRILL 7. Recorded on Milestones Society website in 2010 national ID number BU_BRBU07 on Brill to Buckingham route. In hedge on Edgcott Road north of Hall Cottage. When surveyed in 2002 52cm wide 24cm deep 80 cm high. Reported in 2010 as 'nearly flat'. Inscription varies from that recorded in 1965. Inscription: left: BRILL 7: right: BUCKINGHAM 9. Confirmed by handwritten notes including field surveys mostly in1980s title " MILE POSTS. BUCKINGHAM to BRILL. ( Max Davies only )." NGR: 678 214: Parish: Grendon Underwod: Number on 1" OS 1835: none: Information: Poor: metal mile post: some painted letters illus as over. ( Brill 7 Buck- 9 ). Illustration annotated: Metal mile posts on Buckingham to Brill road. No makers name. All similar design. Mileage disagrees with 1965. [ Handwritten notes and illustration consulted ] (B3).
Accordng to Peter Gullands extensive study of The Toll Roads of Buckinghamshire 1706-1881 with their connections into neghbourng counties 2017 p.27. This important route beween bill and Bckinham through Grendon Underwoodwas never turnpked sometime after the trusts closed in 1880 s 1890s Highway authorities county or distrct or parish put up standardisedmetal posts to white fces wiih blackeck writing. Morre lebgble wth new techology but lable to ro at bottom or get kocked over. During WW2 milemarkers removed for securty sometimes not eplaced or put back in wrong place. According to PG there are 116 in modern recods as against 230 milemarkers in old records in Bucks. [Copy in HER] (B4)
