Description
Winslow cattle market opened in 1875 and was in use as a livestock market at least once a week until it closed in 2007. The covered auction ring building was constructed between 1899 and 1925, along with a number of small buildings, most of which were replaced in the later 20th century when the layout of the market was altered. Trial trenching carried out by Archaeological Services and Consultancy in January 2009 identified a small number of features associated with the cattle market including post lines of wooden cattle pens. Some evidence of levelling and make-up layers 0.4m to 1.05m thick suggest that there had been a deliberate attempt to create a level platform for the construction of the market. See report for detail (B1).
Historic building recording carried out in May 2007 by Archaeological Services and Consultancy. See report for detail (B2).
