Description

Evaluation trial trenching carried out in March 2009 by John Moore Heritage Services found a small number of medieval and probable post-medieval pits and postholes. One undated pit 0.73m X 0.66m and 0.18m deep contained a large stone block, possibly a post pad. A deep pit or posthole 06m X over 0.46m and 0.62m deep contained 13th -late 14th century and late 15th century pottery, although it is possible that the single late 15th century sherd was intrusive. A probable 13th century or mid 14th century pit measuring at least 0.85m X 0.75m and 0.75m deep had been cut by two later pits, possibly in the 17th century. A posthole 0.24m in diameter and 0.25m deep was also undated but thought to be 17th century in date. The sequence was interpreted as demonstrating activity in the 13th to late 14th century, before a period of cultivation which ended in the late 16th or early 17th century with the digging of pits at the NE side of the site [closest to CAS 2153]. See report for detail (B1).
