Evaluation trial trenching carried out by TVAS in May 2008 on line of proposed new access road revealed the remains of a probable early to mid-15th century pottery kiln in trench 3 (retained in-situ). Pottery recovered was mainly Brill/Boarstall wares of 14th to 15th century date, with small quantities of earlier sandy medieval coarsewares. The Brill/Boarstall wares displayed many of the classic signs of kiln waste material, including spalling and incompletely vitrified glaze. There was some evidence of roof tiles used as kiln structures and samples of fired clay may represent kiln lining or kiln furniture. Other features recorded include a NE-SW aligned gully 0.51m wide and 0.1m deep in trench 1 with 12th century pottery sherds in the fill; in trench 2 an undated oval pit 0.98m X 0.58m and 0.35m deep with vertical sides and flat base, and a shallow posthole 0.32m X 0.26m and 0.05m deep with 14th century pottery sherds in the fill; and in trench 5 a N-S aligned shallow ditch 1.19m wide and 0.24m deep with an uneven sloping base and a single sherd of 12th century pottery in the fill.
