Description
There is evidence for one medieval market at Ivinghoe. It was granted by charter and was to beheld on a Thursday. The charter was dated 8th August 1318, and was granted by King Edward II to John bishop of Winchester, and was to be held at the manor.
There is evidence for two medieval fairs at Ivinghoe. The first was granted in a letter close in which it was described as 'feria'. It was to be held on the vigil and feast of St Margaret, which fell on the 20th of July, plus three days after. It was granted by King Henry III to the prioress of Ivinghoe, and was to be held at the manor until the king came of age. In March 1227, King Henry III granted the prioress and nuns of st margaret of the wood of Ivinghoe a fair on the vigil, feast and morrow of St margaret. The day of the charter is not given, but it appears to have been granted around 20th March. There is a letter to the sheriff of Buckinghamshire regarding the charter, dated 22nd March 1227. The second market was granted by charter, and was to be held on the vigil, feast and morrow of the Assumption. The charter was dated 8th August 1318, and was granted by King Edward II to John, bishop of Winchester, and was to be held at the manor (B1)
